Beyond the Walls

As part of my MA thesis presentation, we were required to create an Artefact.

This is mine.

Beyond the Walls amalgamates my embodied physical literacy practices acquired from a lifelong involvement in dance as a student, performer, and educator. Using my walking practice with my dog, Jasper, combined with creating and experiencing practices within the studio as an educator, and integrating inquiry reflections.

Along with my walking practice for contemplation and restoration during my MA journey, I felt moving student bodies and my pedagogical practice as a dance educator needed to be part of this reflection process. Through the interview inquiry process, I accumulated two lists of words that I contemplated during those walks. The first ‘path of postcards’ represents the predominant words interview participants and scholarship provided as the benefits of, or transferrable skills from, participation in dance education. During the inquiry process, I asked interviewees to provide three words that represent dance in their lives. The second group of words shown surrounding the backpack illustrates these sensual transactional paradigms.

As part of the creative process, I requested the dancers select postcards of their choice and create a movement or shape expressing that meaning in movement. Meaning in Action.

I invite you into my artistic representation and exploration of embodied physical literacy and transferable skills dance provides its students throughout the seasons of life, beyond the walls of the studio.
